A 10yr photo challenge with a twist! Well, more like a six-and-a-bit year photo challenge.

Pre-2013 we totally loved Dolmio pasta sauces. Yes, it was out of a jar and hence processed food. But we were crazy busy & it was delicious as well as quick. Also we didn’t really agree that homegrown is tastier.

Then 2013 happened…

We had back to back severe & unprecedented financial crises completely unrelated to Medical School. Wiped out our entire net worth. So one of many things we did to keep going- grew fruit & veg in our dilapidated little backyard.

For example, during most of those years, if our meals had tomatoes in them then it was grown in our garden. John did a massive harvest at the end of growing season and one of us batch cooked soups/pasta sauces to see us through till Spring.

This week, in 2020 we fancied our old Dolmio sauce for a cozy pasta dinner. We made it exactly as we did all those years ago and…

…well, it, erm, it didn’t taste nice at all! Not like homegrown and homemade pasta sauces. True that taste buds change over time but I don’t think that is it. It didn’t really taste like tomatoes! (Sorry Dolmio)

Fancy that?! Fringe benefit of absolute disaster: a taste for homegrown (nowadays also fresh from farms) fruit, veggies & everything cooked with them including jams!! There’s no going back now!

Funny how life turns out, huh?
