It’s late and we’re exhausted. It has not been a good week (John was attacked by a horrid dog, & it has been really awful at the hospital). But one of the bright spots in our months is the day we make our student loan repayment. Today was no different!
Just to give you a bit of background- following Project Career Change (2013 – 2017) we had embarked on Project Financial Peace. Our goal? To pay off a terrifying 6-figure debt.
Till 2013 we had lived a debt free life- it afforded us a soul-sustaining peace, & freedom to do whatever that fulfilled us without worrying about money. Then we had severe family catastrophes- accruing a monumental amount of debt. We worked our tails off & on 1st March 2021 we paid off everything except my Medical School student loan (it represents just over 25% of the total debt).
Now, we hate debt overall. But my student loan we hate with a passion. We had enough money to see our career change through comfortably so it’s a constant reminder of the painful personal disasters that we had walked through. Call it transference but we hate it more than we’ve ever hated an inanimate object. So, it was especially painful for me to hold repayment whilst recovering from my major illness. I wanted it gone- I didn’t much care what it did to me. My John, and some of our friends were more sensible (thank you!).
We have been back hammering away at the Medical School student loan for a few months now. We call it Project Stamp-It Out – a subset of Project Financial Peace. Still on track to be COMPLETELY debt free by January 2023!!
The original completion date for Project Financial Peace was 31st December 2021. Makes it just over a year behind schedule. But considering a global pandemic, and a serious illness, I am so very proud we kept going!! That’s the key with most things, don’t you find? If the goal is still relevant- there’s no giving up.
